NPU participates in World Fish Migration Day on April 21

Norwich Public Utilities (NPU) will once again partner with the State of Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) to celebrate World Fish Migration Day on Saturday, April 21, 2018.

As part of the celebration, events will be held at fourteen locations across Connecticut to demonstrate efforts being made to assist and improve migratory fish runs.

On Saturday, April 21, NPU will host an Open House at the Greeneville Fish Lift, located at 7 Eighth Street, Norwich CT 06360 between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm (The entrance is behind an abandoned warehouse and signs for the event will be posted).  NPU’s Open House will allow visitors to see the fish relocation process as well as an underwater viewing station that is not usually open to the public.

Every year, as a variety of fish make their way up the Shetucket River from Long Island Sound, NPU carefully relocates thousands of fish from below the dam to a safe location further up river, allowing the fish to continue their journey north to spawn.  Over the past 20 years, NPU has moved approximately 100,000 fish through its “Fish Lift” at the Greeneville Dam, a practice that began last week and will continue through the end of June

The World Fish Migration Day (WFMD) is a one-day global celebration to create awareness on the importance of open rivers and migratory fish that has been created by the World Fish Migration Foundation. On this day, organizations from around the world organize events with the common theme of: Connecting Fish, Rivers and People. By working together, the event’s organizers are hoping to raise awareness, share ideas and secure commitments.
